Safety on the mountain

General guidance for walking in the mountains. Local hazards and seasonal warnings are added to each route and shown as alerts.

Before you go

  • Check the weather forecast and the current conditions on this site.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
  • Start early, and plan to be off exposed ground before afternoon storms and before dark.

What to carry

  • Enough water and food for the whole walk.
  • Warm layers and waterproofs, even in summer.
  • A map or the route downloaded for offline use, a charged phone and a head torch.
  • A basic first-aid kit.

On the mountain

  • Weather at altitude changes fast. If in doubt, turn back.
  • Stay on marked paths and respect closures.
  • In a thunderstorm, move down and away from summits and ridges.
  • Snow and ice outside the summer season need experience and the right equipment.

Local hazards

Known local hazards will be listed here and on each route once they have been confirmed.

Conditions on the mountain change quickly. This information is a guide only and does not replace your own judgement, a current forecast and proper equipment.
